Perimeter Wire vs Wire-Free Robot Mowers: The Honest Comparison
Wire-free is the newer technology, and marketing treats newer as better. On a lot of lawns it is. On a shaded one, it isn't. Here is the comparison without the sales pitch.
Installation: not close
This is where wire-free wins outright, and it isn't a marginal difference.
A perimeter wire has to run around the entire boundary of the lawn, plus around every bed, tree and obstacle, pegged down or trenched in. On a medium garden that is most of a weekend on your knees. Get the distance from the edge wrong and the mower either scalps the border or leaves a fringe.
A wire-free install is: place the antenna where it sees sky, walk the mower around the perimeter from your phone, name the zones. An afternoon, including coffee.
Reliability: the wire wins, quietly
A buried wire does not care about the weather, the tree canopy, cloud cover, a neighbour's new extension or a satellite constellation outage. It works the same in year five as on day one.
RTK satellite navigation depends on the mower seeing enough sky. Practical failure points:
- Mature trees over part of the lawn
- A narrow side passage between house and fence
- Tall hedges or walls on the boundary
- An antenna mounted too low
Most "my wire-free mower keeps stopping" complaints are antenna placement, and most are fixable by mounting it higher. But a lawn genuinely under heavy canopy is not a placement problem — it's the wrong technology, and a wire-guided or camera-based mower is the answer.
The wire's own failure mode is a break: a spade, an aerator, or frost heave. When it happens the mower stops dead and finding the break is tedious. Heavier-gauge boundary wire reduces the risk considerably.
Cut pattern: satellite mows in lines, wire bounces
Classic wire-guided mowers navigate randomly. They drive until they hit the boundary, turn at an arbitrary angle, and repeat. Over enough hours the whole lawn gets covered — it works, but it's inefficient, and the lawn never shows mowing stripes.
Satellite-guided mowers know exactly where they are, so they mow in systematic parallel passes. The lawn looks mown rather than grazed, and the same area is covered in less time.
Higher-end wire mowers close this gap with GPS-assisted navigation: the wire defines the boundary while GPS builds a coverage map so the mower stops re-cutting the same strips.
Cost: closer than it looks
Wire-free hardware costs more up front. But price in the install: professional wire installation is a real cost, and doing it yourself is a weekend of labour plus wire, pegs and connectors.
Over a five-year ownership window the two are closer than the sticker price suggests — and if you ever redesign the garden, re-mapping a wire-free mower takes minutes while a wire install starts again from scratch.
Which should you buy?
Choose wire-free if your lawn has open sky, you don't want to bury anything, your garden layout may change, or you want a neat striped finish.
Choose a perimeter wire if your lawn is under mature trees, the shape is complex with narrow passages, you want the most predictable long-term behaviour, or you're buying at the entry end of the market where wire models cover far more ground per dollar.
Choose camera vision if you're heavily shaded but still refuse to bury a wire — it sidesteps both problems, at some cost in precision.
