Robot Mowers on Slopes: What the % Rating Really Means
Slope is the specification most often misread, and the one most likely to turn a purchase into a return. Here is how to read it correctly.
Percent is not degrees
Manufacturers publish gradient as a percentage: rise over run. A slope that climbs 45 ft over 100 ft of horizontal distance is 45%.
In degrees, that's about 24 — roughly half the number. The conversions worth memorising:
- 20% ≈ 11°
- 30% ≈ 17°
- 45% ≈ 24°
- 80% ≈ 39°
- 100% = 45°
To measure your own: find the steepest section, measure the horizontal distance across it, measure the vertical rise over that same distance, divide, multiply by 100. A phone level app against a straight board works well enough.
The rating assumes dry grass
Gradient ratings come from testing on dry turf with good traction. Wet grass is a different surface: effective traction drops sharply, and a mower rated to 35% may start slipping at 25% after rain.
This is why the rating should be read as a ceiling rather than a target. If your steepest bank is 30%, do not buy a 30%-rated mower — buy one rated meaningfully higher.
Two practical mitigations: enable the rain sensor so the mower waits for the grass to dry, and keep the drive wheels clean. Packed clippings in the tread are the most common cause of a mower that climbed a slope in spring and slips on it by July.
When you need all-wheel drive
The standard robot mower layout is two driven rear wheels and a free-spinning front caster. It's simple, light and efficient — and on a steep wet bank the front end has no grip to give.
All-wheel-drive models drive all four wheels, usually with deeper tread. They're heavier, more expensive and slightly harder on the lawn, and they exist for one reason: gradients past roughly 50%, where two-wheel drive stops working.
If your lawn has terracing, a drainage bank or a genuinely steep section, AWD isn't a luxury — it's the only category that will work. Filter the lineup to steep slopes.
Slopes at the boundary
One detail catches people out: a mower rated for a 45% slope in the middle of the lawn may not be rated to drive along the boundary at that gradient, where it has to turn and follow a line rather than climb straight up. Manufacturers often publish a lower figure for boundary slopes.
If your steep section is at the edge of the lawn, check both numbers before buying, and give yourself more margin than you would in open ground.
